Business Planning

Your business should do what you want it to do, rather than you doing what the business wants/needs you to do.  Every business is different, many businesses may have common issues such as wanting to increase profit, improve recruitment and retention of good people and grow, but there are still unique differences that need to be taken into account when helping a business achieve its targets.

Every business venture can follow the Guilford Consulting business planning process. And imagine a business that gives you the time to work on the business and not in the business. You can make the business you once only dreamt about a reality, again by using our proven processes to be more strategic and action focused. As part of any change process you need to look at where you are now.   To measure our improvement and to monitor change we need to 'stick a peg in the ground'.  To do this we are going to use the Mindshop ‘Now-Where-How’ process to measure and monitor our change.

At the start of the process the biggest temptation that arises from the 'Now' Analysis is to start fixing all the things that you find are wrong.  We say that is jumping from the 'Now' Analysis directly to the 'How'.  Why do people do this?  Usually because the reward systems in organisations are focused on who is most visible, what things can we fix immediately, the ‘squeakiest wheel’ syndrome or even who is the cleverest.

The correct approach is to avoid this temptation and invest the time into conducting a 'Where' Analysis which is not as short term as the ‘Now’ as it requires vision and is much harder to do.   The key is to have a good understanding of where we are heading so that when we do get to the 'How' we know what is important and what is not.
